A Periodontal Pocket– This develops due to bacteria which multiply to form plaque which eventually spreads below the gum line, infecting the pocket and the surrounding tissue. This problem requires gum reshaping surgery which will help to restore dental health.

  • Loose teeth
  • Pus between the teeth and gums

Gingival Flap Surgery

Also referred to as pocket reduction, flap surgery is the procedure of removing the tartar and lifting back the gums. This surgery involves creating an incision to access the deep periodontal pockets if they are more than 5 mm in depth. The gum tissue is separated from the teeth, and the depth is cleaned with an ultrasonic scaling device. A specialised device is also used to remove the tartar deposits, after which the gums are stitched back to fit around the teeth.

Bone Grafting

This surgery is also known as a replacement procedure. Those who have a damaged tooth and require a new bone graft need to undertake this surgery. In this procedure, the bone graft, which is a fragment of the patient’s own bone, a synthetic bone or a donated one, is used to replace bone destroyed by gum disease. The surgery provides support to the damaged tooth and aids it to grow like any other teeth.

Guided Tissue Regeneration

Guided tissue regeneration involves inserting a tiny piece of mesh-like material in the middle of gum tissue and the bone. The presence of this mesh-like material stimulates the growth of bone and gum tissue. The main aim of performing this surgery is to enable the healthy growth of the bones and the connective tissues.

Tissue Grafting

It is a surgical procedure that involves the use of soft tissue grafts to treat gum line recession. In this surgery, tissue is removed from one part of the body (mostly the roof of the mouth) and attached to the damaged gum portion.

Tissue grafting is performed in two techniques-

  • Laser therapy- Laser therapy is used to prevent the damage of roots and gums. This is done by reducing the size of the pocket and restoring the connective tissues.
  • Tissue stimulating proteins- Here, the gums are stimulated by injecting a protein gel that strengthens the girth of bones and tissues within.
